Climate chamber ICH for stability testing in accordance with ICH and GMP

Its excellent temperature and humidity homogeneity positions the climate chamber ICH in the international top league of stability test chambers. Thermal transfer to the interior – whether heat or cold – is guaranteed through a large-area air jacket on four sides. Thanks to its hermetically sealed interior, the climate chamber ICH does not consume any water once the setpoints have been reached, provided that the door is not opened. Two high-grade platinum temperature sensors with mutual monitoring guarantee interruption-free long-term operation even if one sensor should fail.

  • Digitally controlled active humidification and dehumidification from 10 to 80 % rh
  • Temperature range from – 10 °C to + 60 °C (models ICH), 0 °C to + 60 °C (modelsICHL)
  • 1 model variant – TwinDISPLAY
  • double doors as standard: Prevention of contamination and drops or prevention of rises in temperature with an optimal view of the chamber load through wide-area interior glass doors

ICH stability testing (Q1B, option 2) in the climate chamber ICHL

In the climate chamber ICHL, a lighting unit can be used for testing in accordance with the ICH guidelines Q1B, option 2 (photostability). Fluorescent lamps with cold white light (daylight: light color 865, 6,500 K) and UV radiation in the spectral range 320 – 400 nm serve as the light source. Daylight and UV light correspond to standard light D65.

Temperature-humidity working range ICH

Not all climate chambers are the same. The humidity content of the chamber load, the ambient conditions and the respective temperature-humidity working range are decisive factors in the selection of the right appliance. In the adjacent diagram, you can see the possible temperature/humidity combinations for our climate chamber ICH.

Within the respective temperature-humidity range, condensation-free permanent operation is possible. To which extent condensation may occur in the threshold range depends on the humidity content of the chamber load and the ambient conditions.

If this does not match your temperature-humidity working range, see the other Memmert climate chambers we supply:

Areas of Use

The Memmert ICHL climate chamber is built specifically for stability testing of pharmaceuticals and biological preparations to international guidelines — including photostability testing with the integrated light module. Typical applications include:

  • Stability testing of pharmaceuticals to ICH Q1A, Q1B and Q1C
  • Photostability testing to ICH Q1B option 2 with cold white light and UV radiation
  • Long-term stability testing at 25 °C / 60 % rh and 30 °C / 65 % rh
  • Accelerated stability testing at 40 °C / 75 % rh
  • Climate testing to WHO, EMA, ASEAN and GCCP guidelines
  • GMP/GLP-validated stability testing with full documentation (IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Storage and testing of biological samples, vaccines and diagnostics
  • Exposing pharmaceuticals to light under controlled climatic conditions

Advantages

Temperature and humidity homogeneity in the top class
The large air jacket on four sides distributes heat and cold evenly throughout the chamber. On temperature and humidity homogeneity, the ICH sits among the leading stability test chambers internationally.

Integrated light module for photostability testing — ICH Q1B option 2
The light module carries cold white light (daylight: light colour 865, 6,500 K) and UV lamps (320–400 nm) matching standard illuminant D65. Both light types are controlled separately from the controller, which is what makes documented photostability testing of pharmaceuticals practical.

Hermetically sealed chamber — no water evaporation
The sealed interior means the chamber consumes no water once setpoints are reached, provided the door stays shut. That cuts running costs and the need for refilling substantially.

Redundant platinum sensors
Two Pt100 sensors (DIN Class A, 4-wire) with mutual monitoring keep operation running even if one sensor fails. That matters in long-term stability studies where an interruption invalidates the run.

Digitally controlled active humidification and dehumidification
Precise digital humidity control from 10 to 80 % rh, with setting accuracy of 0.5 %, regulating actively in both directions. This makes reproducible testing possible across the standard ICH climate zones.

No drying-out of the load
The thermal jacket is separated from the interior, so the cooling system cannot dry out the chamber load — a common weakness in chambers where the evaporator sits in the working space.

GMP/GLP validation and documentation
Full IQ/OQ/PQ documentation available. FDA-compliant AtmoCONTROL (21 CFR Part 11). DAkkS calibration to DKD-R 5-7 as an option.

TwinDISPLAY and AtmoCONTROL
ControlCOCKPIT operation via TFT touchscreen. Full programme control, USB connectivity and Ethernet communication through AtmoCONTROL. Programmes are retained through a power failure.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The ICH (International Council for Harmonisation) defines standardised climatic conditions for stability testing of pharmaceuticals. The most common are long-term at 25 °C / 60 % rh (zone II), intermediate at 30 °C / 65 % rh (zones III/IV) and accelerated at 40 °C / 75 % rh (zone IVb). The Memmert ICHL supports all of these within its working range.

ICH Q1B sets out the requirements for exposing pharmaceuticals to light to document photostability. Option 2 uses a combined light source of cold white daylight (D65, 6,500 K) and UV radiation (320–400 nm). The Memmert ICHL carries exactly that combination, and both light types are controlled separately from the controller.

The hermetically sealed interior stops humid air escaping. The moisture circulates internally with no loss to the surroundings, which cuts the need for refilling substantially during long test runs — a practical and financial advantage over the length of a stability study.

Yes, and it is worth planning for. Without humidity the setting range is 0 °C to +60 °C. With humidity and/or the light module in use, the working range starts at +10 °C. All standard ICH climate zones sit comfortably inside that, but it rules out sub-10 °C testing with humidity control.

Yes. Options ZWVR6 (with filter cartridges) and ZWVR7 (without, for demineralised water at 5–10 µS/cm conductivity) allow the chamber to be plumbed into the building water supply, removing the need to refill the tank by hand.
