Product Specifications

Areas of Use

Hettich Rotina 420/420R is a compact benchtop centrifuge with high performance, developed for industrial environments that require great flexibility in a single machine. With just one cost-effective rotor it handles everything from 4 × 600 ml flasks and 140 blood tubes to 16 microplates and 52 conical 15 ml tubes — without the need for rotor changes.

Typical areas of use include:

  • Quality control and sample preparation in the food industry
  • Environmental analyses of water, soil and sediment samples
  • Separation of large sample volumes (up to 4 × 600 ml) in chemical and pharmaceutical production
  • High-throughput microplate processing (MTP, DWP, PCR) in industrial analysis laboratories
  • Particle separation and sedimentation in materials technology
  • Sample preparation for chemical analyses in industrial R&D departments
  • Separation of emulsions, suspensions and colloids in production environments

Rotina 420R (with cooling) provides temperature control from -20°C to +40°C with pre-cooling function, making it ideal for temperature-sensitive industrial processes.

Advantages

Rotina 420/420R gives industrial businesses a highly versatile benchtop centrifuge that simplifies workflow and reduces the need for multiple machines.

Many solutions – one rotor
The unique 4-place swing-out rotor (4784-A) handles everything from large 600 ml flasks to microlitre tubes, blood tubes, conical tubes and microplates — without changing rotor. This saves time, reduces investment costs and simplifies operator training.

Exceptional performance in compact format
With 24,400 RCF and 15,000 rpm, Rotina 420 delivers centrifugal force on a par with far larger and more expensive centrifuges, all in a compact benchtop format (506 × 650 mm for the standard version).

Extremely quiet operation
With only 50–51 dB(A), Rotina 420/420R is one of the quietest centrifuges in its class. This makes it well suited for use in open production facilities and laboratories where noise is a factor.

Available with and without cooling
Rotina 420 for standard applications and Rotina 420R with integrated cooling from -20°C to +40°C with pre-cooling function for temperature-sensitive samples.

98 programmable memory positions
Store and recall up to 98 centrifugation programmes with 9 individual acceleration and braking steps, plus short-cycle mode for rapid spin-down.

IVDR-compliant
Certified in accordance with EU Regulation 2017/746, which qualifies it for use in regulated diagnostic environments.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The main difference is that Rotina 420R has an integrated cooling system that allows the chamber temperature to be adjusted from -20°C to +40°C with a pre-cooling function. This is essential for temperature-sensitive samples such as biological specimens, enzymes and cell cultures. The 420R is also significantly larger (713 × 654 × 423 mm vs. 506 × 650 × 423 mm) and heavier (approx. 108 kg vs. 75 kg) due to the cooling unit.

It refers to the unique 4-place swing-out rotor (4784-A) which, without any rotor change, can handle a wider range of tube types and sample volumes than any comparable rotor in its class — from large 600 ml flasks and 140 blood tubes to 16 microplates, 52 conical 15 ml tubes and microlitre tubes. This eliminates the need to purchase and switch between multiple rotors for different applications.

Depending on the application, Rotina 420/420R handles up to 4 × 600 ml flasks, 140 blood tubes, 16 microplates or 52 × 15 ml conical tubes per run — all with the same rotor. For microlitre applications, the rotor also supports standard 1.5/2.0 ml tubes in high numbers.

Rotina 420/420R has a noise level of only 50–51 dB(A), making it one of the quietest centrifuges in its performance class. This makes it well suited for open production facilities, quality control laboratories and research environments where noise levels are a consideration.

Rotina 420 is optimised for compactness and versatility with a footprint of only 506 × 650 mm and one rotor that covers the full application range. Rotanta 460 is a larger floor-standing model with higher maximum capacity, designed for environments with very high throughput requirements. Rotina 420 is the preferred choice when bench space is limited but performance and flexibility requirements are high.

Yes. Rotina 420/420R is IVDR-compliant in accordance with EU Regulation 2017/746, making it approved for use in regulated diagnostic and industrial environments across the EU. It supports the documentation and traceability requirements typical of GMP and ISO-certified production environments.
