Scroll pump

SCSpro 15 – new generation scroll pump from Welch

The dry scroll pump SCSpro 15 marks the beginning of a new series of scroll pumps from Welch. This is the first step towards a complete scroll range covering a wide spectrum of applications — from laboratories to industrial processes.

The advanced dual-spiral technology uses a precisely engineered, oil-free system where gas is captured and compressed evenly from inlet to outlet. The result is stable and clean vacuum performance — a modern alternative to oil-sealed rotary vane pumps.

Key advantages

  • Oil-free, deep vacuum for clean processes and simple maintenance
  • Self-cleaning function without affecting vacuum performance
  • Continuous operation from atmospheric pressure to ultimate vacuum
  • Robust motor with dual voltage/frequency
  • Integrated hour meter for precise service planning
  • Built-in carrying handle and modular design for easy service

Typical areas of use

Scroll pumps are used in a range of applications requiring stable and clean vacuum, including freeze-dryers with ultra-low condensers (-80°C or lower), glove boxes, vacuum ovens with cold traps, turbo fore-pumping and evacuation of cryogenic lines.

Areas of Use

SCSpro 15 is a modern alternative to oil-sealed rotary vane pumps and is suited for applications requiring deep, clean vacuum without oil. Typical areas of use include:

  • Freeze-dryers with ultra-low condensers (–80°C or lower)
  • Glove boxes where a clean vacuum source is critical
  • Vacuum ovens with cold traps
  • Degassing of gases and liquids
  • Fore-pumping of turbomolecular pumps
  • Evacuation of cryogenic lines and low-temperature installations

Advantages

SCSpro 15 combines deep vacuum, oil-free operation and low maintenance in one compact unit — a significant technological advance compared to conventional oil-sealed rotary vane pumps.

Oil-free deep vacuum
SCSpro 15 achieves vacuum down to 0.016 mbar without the use of oil — the same vacuum level as many oil-sealed pumps, but without the risk of oil contamination of samples, instruments or processes.

Self-cleaning function during operation
The built-in air purge function removes condensed vapours that may accumulate in the pump from a closed application. The purging does not affect vacuum performance and occurs automatically during normal operation.

Continuous operation
SCSpro 15 can run continuously from atmospheric pressure to ultimate vacuum without any warm-up period or cooling between runs.

Robust dual-voltage/frequency motor
The motor with IP54 enclosure (TEFC) supports both 115V/60Hz and 220–240V/50/60Hz and is designed for long-term, reliable operation in demanding industrial environments.

Integrated hour meter
Built-in hour meter provides accurate oversight of operating hours, enabling precise and cost-effective service planning.

Modular design for easy service
The pump is designed for fast and easy service without special tools. Wear parts are readily accessible and replaceable without sending the pump for service.

Compact with built-in carrying handle
Weighing under 30 kg and with a built-in handle, SCSpro 15 is easy to move and install in different setups.

Who is SCSpro 15 suited for?

SCSpro 15 is ideal for laboratories and industrial businesses that need deep, clean vacuum without oil and with low maintenance requirements. It is particularly well suited for:

  • Pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories with freeze-dryers and ultra-low condensers (–80°C or lower)
  • Chemical research laboratories with glove boxes where a clean vacuum source is essential
  • Laboratories with vacuum ovens and cold traps where oil contamination is unacceptable
  • Analytical laboratories using turbomolecular pumps that need reliable fore-pumping
  • Industrial installations with cryogenic lines requiring smooth and continuous evacuation
  • Laboratories that want to replace oil-sealed rotary vane pumps with a low-maintenance alternative

Note: For applications where a vacuum level between 1.5 and 266 mbar is sufficient, or where capacity requirements are lower, Welch diaphragm vacuum pumps may be a more cost-effective alternative.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A scroll pump uses two interlocked spiral elements — one fixed and one orbiting — that compress gas smoothly and continuously from the inlet to the outlet without any oil. A rotary vane pump uses rotating vanes in an oil-filled chamber to compress gas. The key differences are: scroll pumps are completely oil-free (eliminating contamination risk), require less maintenance (no oil changes), run quieter and can achieve comparable ultimate pressures. The trade-off is that scroll pumps are generally larger and more expensive per unit of pumping speed. SCSpro 15 achieves 0.016 mbar — comparable to many oil-sealed pumps — without any of the maintenance burden.

Yes. SCSpro 15 is designed for continuous operation from atmospheric pressure to ultimate vacuum without any warm-up period, cool-down time or breaks between runs. This makes it well suited for applications with 24/7 demand such as freeze-drying processes, continuous glove box evacuation and permanent fore-pumping of turbomolecular pumps.

The self-cleaning air purge function automatically introduces a controlled flow of air through the pump during operation. This carries away condensed vapours — such as water or solvents — that may accumulate in the pump cavity from a closed or partially closed application. Unlike gas ballast on oil-sealed pumps, the air purge in SCSpro 15 does not compromise ultimate vacuum performance, and it operates continuously and automatically without any manual intervention.

SCSpro 15 has an inlet port NW25 (vertical orientation) and an outlet port NW16. The stainless steel ports are compatible with standard KF flange fittings. Contact Industrihuset for information on compatible fittings, hoses and cold trap accessories for your specific installation.

SCSpro 15 requires significantly less maintenance than oil-sealed rotary vane pumps. The primary service items are the PTFE tip seal and FKM exhaust valve, which are wear parts that can be replaced without special tools thanks to the modular design. Service intervals depend on operating conditions and the media being pumped — the integrated hour meter helps track operating hours for precise, cost-effective service planning. Contact Industrihuset for recommended service intervals for your specific application.
