Applications

The BULKINSPECTOR gas pycnometer from Siebtechnik Tema is developed for laboratories and industrial facilities that require precise and reproducible density determination of solids and bulk materials. The device is equally suited to laboratory conditions and to demanding process environments in industrial plants.

Typical applications include:

  • Powder metallurgy – measuring sintered density and cast density to check for voids
  • Petroleum coke – porosity measurement
  • 3D printing and additive manufacturing – component characterisation with measurement of solid content
  • Pharmaceutical industry – measuring tablet compression and detecting pore inclusions
  • Cosmetics industry – measuring pore inclusions in lipstick
  • Roll compression and bulk material compaction
  • Determination of purity, chemical conversion, moisture content and thermal expansion coefficient
  • Plastics and composite materials – measuring filler content
  • Construction industry – measuring density and porosity in materials
  • Geology – measuring porosity in drill cores

Advantages

No manual intervention – weighing and volume determination are performed automatically in the device during measurement

Highly accurate – fast and reproducible measurements of sample density with a measurement uncertainty of ± 0.02%

Closed system – the insulated steel housing is unaffected by noise, dust, heat, cold, dirt or moisture

Peltier temperature control – the interior of the housing is heated or cooled as required for a constant measurement temperature – neither ambient air pressure nor altitude affects the measurement result

Variable measuring cup volumes – 130, 65 and 10 cm³ with 4 holding positions in the device for flexible adaptation

Non-destructive testing – the sample material remains intact after analysis

Automatic calibration – recalibration can be performed during ongoing operation using a calibration sphere

Approximately 12 measurements per hour – significantly faster than manual pycnometers (4-5 measurements/hour with trained personnel)

Frees up the laboratory technician – no supervision required during measurement, and measurements can be carried out outside working hours

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The BULKINSPECTOR PYC 130-A is the world’s first fully automatic gas pycnometer. It determines the true density (skeletal density) of solids and bulk materials by automatically measuring volume and mass in a single device, without manual intervention.

With conventional pycnometers, the entire process is manual – the technician has to move the sample between a balance and a pycnometer, which introduces sources of error. The BULKINSPECTOR automates the entire process: weighing, volume determination, emptying and cleaning all take place within a single closed system. It performs approximately 12 measurements per hour, compared to 4-5 with manual equipment.

Yes, the BULKINSPECTOR is a closed system with an insulated steel housing that is unaffected by noise, dust, heat, cold, dirt or moisture. Peltier elements keep the temperature constant, and neither air pressure nor altitude affects the result. It is equally suited to laboratories and to demanding industrial plants.

The device is controlled via an included tablet app with a user-friendly interface. Here you can set up formulas for different samples, manage measurement logs, export data via Wi-Fi, and order spare parts directly. User permissions can be set with password-protected levels.

Yes, with the optional sample magazine (25 or 50 samples), the BULKINSPECTOR can analyse samples automatically for hours. Laboratory staff only need to fill the magazine and empty the collection container. Measurements can also be carried out outside working hours.
