Product Specifications

Areas of Use

The Memmert VOcool is built for vacuum drying of materials that cannot tolerate heat — where a standard vacuum oven, with a lower limit of +20 °C, is unsuitable. Peltier cooling combined with precise vacuum control down to 5 mbar covers a wide span of demanding applications. Typical applications include:

  • Gentle drying of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical preparations and biological samples
  • Drying of probiotics, cultures and live microorganisms
  • Low-temperature vacuum drying of polymers, composites and coatings
  • Packaging testing for air freight — simulating aircraft cabin conditions
  • Drying of electronic components at low temperature
  • Preservation and dehydration of foodstuffs
  • Material testing under controlled pressure and temperature
  • Any process where sub-ambient temperature combined with vacuum is critical

Advantages

Cooled vacuum drying down to +5 °C — without a compressor
Integrated Peltier cooling gives temperature control all the way down to +5 °C. That makes the VOcool the right choice for materials that cannot take heat but still need vacuum for effective drying. No compressor means no vibration and minimal noise.

Precise temperature control at the shelf
Temperature is measured by a 4-wire Pt100 sensor individually for each thermoshelf. MLC (Multi-Level-Controlling) keeps each shelf at its set temperature regardless of load and humidity.

AutoSAFETY — integrated over- and undertemperature protection
Beyond the mechanical temperature limiter (TB, protection class 1 to DIN 12880), the VOcool has built-in AutoSAFETY (ASF) which follows the setpoint automatically within a preset tolerance range. Heating switches off on overtemperature; cooling activates on undertemperature.

Simulating aircraft cabin conditions
The VOcool is particularly well suited to packaging tests for air freight. Products destined to travel by air can be exposed to equivalent low-pressure conditions in the chamber to verify the packaging withstands the pressure change.

TwinDISPLAY and AtmoCONTROL
Adaptive PID microprocessor control with two high-definition TFT colour displays. Full programme control via AtmoCONTROL on a USB stick or over Ethernet. Programmes are retained through a power failure.

Corrosion-resistant, hygienic design
The stainless steel chamber (1.4404 / ASTM 316L) resists aggressive substances and is easy to clean. The textured stainless steel housing (1.4016 / ASTM 430) gives long service life. A full-sight glass door with 15 mm safety glass and an anti-splinter screen keeps operation safe.

Energy-efficient
At 500 W to 750 W depending on model, the VOcool is an energy-saving solution — particularly measured against compressor-based alternatives.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The standard VO has a setting range from +20 °C to +200 °C and cannot cool below room temperature. The VOcool uses Peltier cooling and gives temperature control down to +5 °C, but with an upper limit of +90 °C. The VOcool is therefore the right choice when samples are too heat-sensitive for a standard oven but still need vacuum for effective drying. Note also that the VOcool takes one thermoshelf, against two in the standard VO.

Peltier elements cool electronically with no moving parts — no compressor, no vibration, minimal noise. For vacuum drying of sensitive biological samples and pharmaceutical preparations, the absence of vibration matters. Peltier cooling is also more compact and easier to integrate into a benchtop unit than a compressor.

MLC is Memmert’s multi-level control technology, which ensures temperature is controlled at shelf level rather than in the chamber air. Combined with an individual Pt100 sensor per thermoshelf, this gives very precise, reproducible temperature control right where the sample sits.

Yes. Memmert specifically identifies the VOcool as suited to packaging tests for air freight. Aircraft operate at cabin pressures of roughly 750–800 mbar, well inside the VOcool’s range, which extends down to 5 mbar. This matters for manufacturers shipping products by air who need to document that the packaging withstands the pressure change.

SetpointWAIT ensures the process time does not begin counting down until the set temperature has actually been reached in the chamber. That gives a more precise and reproducible process — particularly important when drying sensitive samples, where exposure at the wrong temperature can affect the result.
